Response to Media Report:
ABC 7:30 Program regarding RLSSQ

On 17 May 2012, the Royal Life Saving Society Queensland ("RLSSQ") was the subject of a number of serious allegations made in a story aired on the ABC's 7:30 Report program.

Those allegations particularly related to the outcomes of an Audit conducted of the RLSSQ by the Department of Communities – Sport and Recreation Services ("DCSRS") in October 2010.

The audit process was conducted over the period October 2010 to July 2011, during which time RLSSQ provided its full cooperation.  RLSSQ has always and continues to report appropriately in relation to its grants and funding.

RLSSQ received confirmation from the DCSRS in July 2011 that the audit process was complete and that, taking into account submissions made by RLSSQ in relation to matters that were aired on the ABC's program, no further action would be taken regarding the outcomes of the Audit.

At the time of the original Audit, RLSSQ discussed the Audit with its national body.  Royal Life Saving Society Australia was comfortable that the matter was handled appropriately and was satisfied by the Department's confirmation that the matter was at an end.

At the Society's AGM convened on 22 September 2011, the Executive Director made it known to RLSSQ members that the Audit had been conducted and that 15 recommendations had been made.  There we no questions from the members in attendance regarding the Audit.

The Society is aware that its members have been the target of an email regarding the Audit purporting to be from the Executive Director.  This is not the case, and the matter will be referred to the police.

The organisation has at all times cooperated fully with the Department.  RLSSQ, through its Audit Committee established in response to the audit process, continues to take steps to implement the necessary reforms to address the recommendations made in the Audit Report.

RLSSQ will participate fully and proactively in any future audits.

RLSSQ will continue to pursue and uphold its mission to prevent injury and death in the community, particularly in an aquatic environment, by raising public awareness and through the education of individuals.

Members of the Royal Life Saving Society Queensland received their Commonwealth and National Honours from the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO, at a special function hosted at Government House, Brisbane, on Friday 3 June 2011.
